Industry Updates to Lookout, COSS and ICI
All you need to know about recent industry updates

Lookout

It is now a requirement for Lookout that Non-Technical Skills are undertaken both for new and existing holders of the competence.
For those undertaking initial training, a delegate will sit the course as normal. If successful when on lined with Sentinel they will be allocated as a (P) status Lookout. This does not affect their ability to undertake the role as lookout but requires them to be supported and mentored by their sponsor. This means that they must complete a post training development workbook following the lookout initial training.
They must also then complete e-learning NTS. This is booked by their sponsor in the same way as PTS e-learning, find attached the instructions.
From initial training the lookout must have completed both the development book and the e-learning within 12 months otherwise their competence will be suspended!

Existing lookouts do not drop into (P) status but are required to have completed e-learning by July 2015.

Controller of Site Safety

All operational COSS’s need to have completed Non-Technical skills (NTS) by June 2015 to ensure that the COSS element is retained. Failure to have completed successfully by this date, meaning each COSS needs to attend a COSS NTS day will result in COSS competence being taken down. All COSS NTS training is completed by NWR and is unavailable to external training organisations.
COSS NTS is based around behavioural safety and 8 elements of non-technical skills. If a COSS fails the event they will still retain the new competence of COSS Theory but would be unable to undertake COSS duty unless under mentorship. To regain competence, mentorship must have been undertaken and the candidate attend a further development day.

Industry Common Induction (ICI)

There is a new competence which is not mandatory called ICI. This is sentinel based and is derived to remove the long drawn out inductions commonly undertaken on renewals sites reducing the productive time an operative spends on site.
This is becoming increasingly popular and Intertrain are receiving significant calls relative to the assessments required.
How it works is again e-learning. Booked by the sponsor in the same way as PTS / Lookout. Once a candidate completes the e-learning they have to attend a RTAS training provider to undertake the assessment which is e-learning based as this must be performed under exam conditions.
The assessment takes around 20-45minutes and is costed at £25+VAT. Intertrain will be offering this in slots each day at all the centres we currently offer e-learning.
